Healthy aging is more than just eating right and getting enough exercise. While those things are important, it is also essential for seniors to be aware of fall risks.

Fact: One in 4 Americans aged 65+ falls every year

Fact: Falls are the leading cause of fatal and non-fatal injuries for older Americans

Falls are costly. Whether it is an increase in your medial bill or a decrease in your overall health. However, falling is not an inevitable part of aging.

What can you do to decrease a risk of fall?

Most falls can be prevented. Below are 6 steps to prevent falls based on evidence from the National Council on Aging:

  1. Find a good balance and exercise program – check your senior center or local area agency on aging for information on what types of programs are available in your area.
  2. Talk to your healthcare provider and ask for a risk assessment.
  3. Regularly review your medications with your doctor of pharmacist. Side effects may increase your risk of falling. Only take medications prescribed to you.
  4. Get your vision and hearing checked annually and update your eyeglasses.
  5. Keep your home safe by removing tripping hazards, increase lighting and installing grab bars in key areas around the house (especially in the bathroom).
  6. Talk to your family members about taking a few simple steps to preventing falls. These are easy things you can do to stay safe.
