Stay Alert: Fall & Winter Scams Targeting Seniors in South Carolina

By Chris Hadley, President & CEO, BBB Serving Central SC and Charleston

As the leaves change and temperatures drop, scammers are working overtime to take advantage of South Carolinians—especially seniors. The Better Business Bureau wants you to stay safe this season by knowing what to watch out for.

  1. Heating & Home Repair Scams
Cooler weather means more calls from “contractors” offering quick furnace tune-ups or roof repairs. Many of these so-called experts demand payment upfront, then disappear without finishing the work. Protect yourself by researching companies at BBB.org before hiring.

Medicare Open Enrollment Cons
Fall is Medicare open enrollment season, and scammers know it. They may call or email pretending to represent Medicare, offering “free upgrades” or new plans. Remember: Medicare will never call and ask for your personal information. If you need help, contact a trusted local resource or go directly to Medicare.gov.

Online Holiday Shopping Traps
As families gear up for the holidays, fraudulent websites pop up with “can’t-miss” deals on popular gifts. Scammers create fake stores, take your money, and never deliver. Look for the BBB Seal, check reviews, and use a credit card for added protection.

  1. Charity Imposters
South Carolinians are generous, especially during the holidays. Scammers take advantage by creating fake charities or spoofing well-known names. Always verify charities at Give.org before donating.

  2. Utility Shut-off Threats
Colder months bring a spike in fake utility calls. Scammers claim your heat or electricity will be shut off unless you pay immediately by gift card or wire transfer. Legitimate companies will never demand payment in this way.

Stay Safe This Season
Scams change with the seasons, but your best defense is awareness. Take your time before making decisions, check businesses and charities through BBB, and never give personal information to unsolicited callers.

IF YOU SUSPECT A SCAM, report it to BBB Scam Tracker at BBB.org/ScamTracker. Your report can help warn others in our community.
